[merced county transit "the bus"]
in a time of high population growth, rising gas prices, and concerns over air quality, many communities look to public transportation services to help alleviate such issues. merced county transit (“the bus”) has stepped forward to take on these challenges, aiming to improve the overall quality of life for county residents. “the bus” was established as a countywide transit service in july 1996 after the consolidation of four local transportation service providers and has served merced county for over a decade.
merced county transit has experienced significant growth in recent years and continues to provide a wealth of services for the entire community. “the bus” provides adults, seniors, mobility-impaired persons, and the community at-large with convenient and affordable transportation options. the growth experienced by merced county transit has been prevalent, increasing nearly 10 percent and reaching 1,136,000 riders during fiscal year 2007/2008.
at present, “the bus” operates 27 vehicles on over 16 fixed-routes and operates 16 additional buses in support of door-to-door dial-a-ride services. merced county transit is overseen by the transit joint powers authority for merced county, which consists of the cities of atwater, dos palos, gustine, livingston, los banos, merced, and the county of merced. “the bus” is managed by the transportation division of the merced county department of public works.
starting in 2005, efforts were made my merced county transit to reduce air pollution by providing free rides to local residents during “spare the air” days. during the months of august, september, and october from 2005 to 2007, the program gave out over 1.2 million rides with the help of a federal grant. this amounted to over 109,000 gallons of gas saved and a near 20-ton reduction of carbon dioxide in the air. in 2006, “the bus” obtained 9 orion VII “clean air buses”, powered by compressed natural gas. these vehicles produce a very low degree of emissions and provide additional support in the effort to reduce pollution in merced county and the san joaquin valley.
for 2007, “the bus” initiated the car-less commute service to better serve the needs of commuters and businesses throughout merced county. formerly known as the employer-based transit program (ebt), the car-less commute service offers bus routes tailored to business locations and employee residences. the service enables commuters to save on gas via public transportation, while maintaining personal flexibility.
in the future, merced county transit plans to add more clean air buses, accompanied by the development of a compressed natural gas fueling facility. upcoming changes will also include the development of a designated bus stop signage program, as well as the procurement of 12 additional dial-a-ride vehicles to better accommodate the needs of county residents.
